Spiritual Support

For all its difficulty, human illness can also be a call to deeper faith and hope. Supporting the entire person, including providing resources for spiritual needs for inpatients, has also been central to our mission.  Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes and Virtua Willingboro Hospital offer a number of options for patients of faith or seeking solice.

These medical centers see a special connection not just between health and psychosocial well being but also between hospital care and spiritual support.  They offer resources to patients who want avail themselves of this type of support.

The Pastoral/Spiritual Care Department at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes is committed to attending to the spiritual and emotional needs of all Lourdes patients, regardless of religious affiliations. A chaplain will usually visit all patients to offer assistance with regard to any religious concerns or requests during their hospitalization.  Chaplains are available to attend to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients and families and can provide grief and bereavement support.  A chaplain can also assist patients with advanced directives.

Health involves integration of the physical, psychological, socia and spiritual aspects of life –– as well as harmony with self, others, the environment, and God.  Parish nurses provide the link between traditional health care and spiritual health.  By virtue of its Catholic affiliations as a religious-based health organization, Lourdes enjoys special opportunities to promote health in its served communities. Through its parish nursing program, members of its nursing staff can conduct screenings and education that support disease prevention, detection, and intervention.  Parish nurses are persons of faith who are experienced registered nurses.  In this ministry, they may direct parishioners to available resources and can also help these congregants access and navigate the health system.  Many common public health challenges are partly lifestyle diseases, and our parish nurses, with their many talents, can help individuals recognize and reverse risk factors. They may visit these clients and their families at home, in nursing homes and in hospitals.
