Over recent decades, ultrasound has become one of the most important forms of radiologic imaging. Using high-frequency sound waves only, this technology can serve a role in imaging any location in the body-and it does not expose patients to radiation.  A handheld instrument placed on the skin transmits ultra-high frequency sound waves and picks up and interprets their echoes. (In some cases, specialists may also introduce small ultrasound probes into the body.)  A computer creates images of the sound waves bouncing back from internal body tissue to show the shape of the tissue, as well as its density and certain aspects of its motion.

Ultrasound instruments are relatively compact and thus more portable than other forms for radiology.  Ultrasonographers can use them most often to evaluate organs or areas in the trunk of the body-in addition to ultrasound’s well-known use in monitoring the health of the fetus in the womb.

Virtua also makes major use of ultrasound in diagnosing vascular conditions and in vascular procedures, as well as in diagnosing the function of the heart. In addition, this type of imaging is particularly helpful in placing needles and catheters for kidney-failure patients who must undergo dialysis and for evaluating the function of dialysis access catheters and grafts, as well as vessel mapping for placement of new access grafts when required.

This safe, affordable technology is used worldwide and does not expose patients to radiation.

Radiologists and radiology technicians, and other staff members at Virtua who provide ultrasound are specially trained in this technology. They work to provide the most advanced and up-to-date ultrasound studies.

The American College of Radiology has accredited the ultrasound services at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes, in Camden, or Virtua Willingboro Hospital.
