Infusion Center

Today, patients benefit from many important therapies delivered by intravenous (I.V.) infusion.  Virtua’s infusion centers support the doctor-prescribed treatment of patients with a range of infusion needs.  Patients may be referred from a variety of different specialty areas.

Both Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes and Virtua Willingboro Hospital offer infusions to treat a broad spectrum of disease conditions.  Patients referred from medical oncology, hematology, infectious disease, surgery, gastroenterology, rheumatology, pulmonology, neurology and other clinical areas benefit from the latest infusion protocols in these outpatient units.

Types of therapeutics provided via I.V. administration by the experienced infusion center staffs include:

  • chemotherapeutics (intravenous infusion or subcutaneous (under the skin) injections of drugs or combinations of drugs used to kill cancer cells) (chemotherapy)
  • blood products (including red cells, platelets and plasma for patients who have depleted levels of these blood components)
  • hydration (use of glucose/saline/water formulations to restore fluid and electrolyte levels in the blood to treat dehydration)
  • steroids (when oral steroids are not sufficient to treat acute inflammations, including from auto-immune-related conditions such a multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus or rheumatoid arthritis)
  • biologics (pharmaceutical drug products manufactured in, extracted from, or semi-synthesized from biological sources to treat auto-immune-related diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis), MS and psoriatic conditions; or to treat or prevent osteoporosis in women after menopause; or to treat high blood-calcium levels or bone damage)
  • immune globulin (which is concentrated from the plasma of donated blood and serves to supplement patients’ blood antibodies and to strengthen or stabilize the body’s natural defense system in individuals with a compromised or disordered immune system, and to stimulate blood count)
  • iron (for iron deficiency anemia when dietary and oral iron are not sufficient)
  • monoclonal antibodies (proteins, produced in the lab from identical immune cells, that are programmed to seek out and eliminate certain types of abnormal cells or tissue by attaching to their surfaces to attract disease-fighting molecules or as a trigger that promotes cell destruction by other immune system processes, including blocking ability of a tumor to grow; used primarily to destroy cancer but also in auto-immune conditions such as arthritis, MS, lupusand IBD)
  • hormones (hormonal therapy using the stimulating glandular excretions of the body’s own endocrine system to treat hormone deficit or excesses caused by low estrogen (e.g. in menopause), low testosterone or abnormalities of the thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary or adrenal glands)
  • carcinoid tumor drugs (drugs to shrink a rare type of cancer that occurs most often in the gastrointestinal system or lungs and that secrets chemicals that causes skin and digestive-tract symptoms)

The staff also commonly provides these types of venous procedures:

  • vascular access de-clotting (opening, purging, cleansing catheters that patients have indwelling for dialysis (fistulas/grafts), home I.V. therapy and other purposes)
  • therapeutic phlebotomies(a procedure very much like a blood donation that removes blood from a person’s body to reduce overload of certain blood components in various conditions, especially an excess of iron in the blood)

The staff of these Virtua infusion centers deliver these important therapies and interventions in a comfortable, modern, cheerful environment in which patients can relax and have time to themselves or interact with their support persons or the staff.  With the infusion units located in Virtua hospitals, medical support is close at hand should any concerns arise.

The units work to offer convenient scheduling and close collaboration with referring offices and physicians.  Patients and family can rest assured that they are served by a professional, courteous and caring staff –– and that safety is at the forefront of every infusion session.
