At Lourdes Health System, nursing services and nursing education is point of pride. Lourdes believes in a prominent role for nursing, a strong nursing structure and a variety of opportunities for advancement in the nursing field.
Lourdes Health System’s Department of Nursing embraces a shared governance model in order to have nurses involved in all levels of decision making. There are councils on each unit and several Health System-wide Councils.
The Professional Governance Council is comprised of a staff nurse from each clinical unit as well as management representation. This Council offers a forum and the infrastructure for staff and leadership to communicate. This allows for critical thinking and clinical decision making and thereby foster autonomy, collaboration and growth that are in concert with system goals and standards for ensuring comparable levels of nursing care throughout the Health System.
Reporting to the Professional Governance Council are councils dedicated to each major domain of our model; Quality, Professional Development, Research and Practice. All 5 of these councils are chaired by an elected staff nurse.
By utilizing an integrated team approach, shared governance provides an environment that fosters a unified community for empowerment, equity, commitment, trust and respect to strengthen and improve the delivery of patient/family centered care.
The Career Ladder is designed to encourage and assist nurses to further their professional development and to reward them for their commitment to professional growth and excellent patient care. It is also our belief that the achievements afforded through the Career Ladder instill a sense of pride and achieve in the work that nurses perform. The implementation and maintenance of this program also enhances the Lourdes Health System’s ability to recruit and retain professional nurses who, in turn, contribute to the achievement of quality patient outcomes.
