Lourdes Health System Names Sister Elizabeth Corry Award Winner

Employee Honored for Dedication to Mission, Values

Lourdes Health System employee and Mt. Laurel resident Joyce Haag, MPH, BSN, RN, has been selected as the recipient of Lourdes’ prestigious 2018 Sister M. Elizabeth Corry, OSF Award. The annual award is the highest honor bestowed upon a Lourdes Health System employee and is named after the former president of Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center.

Haag, a heart failure care transitions nurse with Lourdes Cardiology, was among 32 employees from throughout the health system nominated for demonstrating the core values that are the foundation of Lourdes’ mission, including reverence, commitment to those who are poor, justice, stewardship, integrity, hospitality and joy.

“I am honored to be recognized with the Sister Corry Award,” said Haag. “I could not do what I do without my coworkers and the support of our leadership, who have created a culture of caring and service. The culture created by Sister Elizabeth resides in me and all who work here. It is giving care with good hands, good minds and good hearts, and doing so holistically—caring for mind, body and spirit. It takes a village, and so many of my coworkers step up every day. I am just grateful and blessed to work with the people here at Lourdes.”

A 22-year Lourdes employee, Haag is known for always thinking about the greater good and treating each person as a member of her family.

In one nomination letter, Haag was noted for commitment to those who are poor. “As a member of our team, she would visit people’s homes, not just to review medications, but make sure they had food in the house, utility bills were paid, and they had sufficient blankets and clothing for the family. It has been said that true integrity is doing the right thing when no one else is around to know if you did it or not. Joyce does what so many will never know about except those she helped.”

Lourdes President Reginald Blaber, MD, credits Sister Elizabeth for creating the culture of caring and compassion epitomized by staff members like Haag.

“There is no greater legacy that Sister Elizabeth Corry left than the culture which has impacted generations of our patients,” he said. “At Lourdes, our team lives our values.”

The award is named for Sister. M. Elizabeth Corry, OSF, who served as president of Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center from 1969 to 1983 and 1987 to 1995. Under her guidance and leadership, Lourdes initiated many of the services which the medical center is known for today, including cardiology, organ transplantation, acute physical rehabilitation and maternity care. In 1995, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center became the only hospital in the tri-state area to receive the American Hospital Association’s Foster McGaw award for excellence in community service. Sister Elizabeth passed away in February 2015.
