Lourdes Health Foundation Honors Lourdes’ Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alan Pope with its Healing Spirit Award

CAMDEN, NJ—Lourdes Health Foundation has chosen Alan Pope, MD, FACP, FCCP, as the recipient of its 2018 Healing Spirit Award. The annual award honors a

Lourdes physician for his or her compassion, dedication to patients and years of service. Dr. Pope is the Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Lourdes Health System.

The 2018 award was presented to Dr. Pope on April 14 at Lourdes Health Foundation’s annual fundraising gala and silent auction, “The Dance 2018—An Enchanted Evening.” Proceeds from the event, held at The Water Works in Philadelphia, benefit Lourdes community programs and services. More than 400 regional medical and business leaders were in attendance.

“Great people have received the Healing Spirit award previously, so it’s hard for me to express my gratitude,” said Dr. Pope. “It is a privilege to work with patients at their most vulnerable. I’m fortunate to be a physician, to have a leadership role and to help guide the health system, and to work with my colleagues. I’m humbled.”

A Connecticut native, Dr. Pope earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Harvard University.

After completing his fellowship at Harvard, Dr. Pope settled in South Jersey and joined a private pulmonary practice. A few years later, he went on to become the founder of Delaware Valley Pulmonary Associates and Critical Care Associates of Delaware Valley, now known as Pulmonary & Sleep Associates of South Jersey, where he continues to practice pulmonary and critical care medicine.

During his time in private practice, Dr. Pope also was part of the medical staff at Lourdes. In 1994, he became Chief of Pulmonary Medicine, and in 2010, Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy. Additional roles ensued, as the Director of the Critical Care Unit, as a Board of Trustees member, then Chair of the Department of Medicine, and to his current role as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Pope says wearing administrative and clinical hats gives him a unique perspective. “In my leadership role, I try to move the bar for everyone and change processes that help many people at one time. Being a physician as well, I can see how things can work in practice. Then to see patients one-on-one as a pulmonologist and help them with their problems, it’s a respite for me because it’s where I started. I enjoy doing both.”

Dr. Pope has been named a “Top Doc” multiple times by New Jersey Monthly and SJ magazine. He is the author of numerous scientific publications in clinical, physiologic and immunologic pulmonary medicine.

Dr. Pope is a diplomate of the American Boards of Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. He has held leadership positions in the Camden County Medical Society, Medical Society of New Jersey and New Jersey Thoracic Society and holds faculty appointments at Jefferson Medical College and the Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Pope is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Physicians and the American Association of Sleep Medicine.
