Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center Recognized as Top 10 Percent in Nation for Excellence in Cardiac Surgery by Healthgrades

hg_cardiac_surgery_award_image_2017Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center has recently been recognized as one of a select group of hospitals–the top 10% of hospitals in the nation–as providing excellence in cardiac surgery, as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Healthgrades also named Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center a five-star recipient in the treatment of sepsis, respiratory failure, pneumonia, and diabetic emergencies, as well as heart valve surgery and defibrillator procedures.

These achievements are part of new findings and data released by Healthgrades and featured in Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation.

“These achievements are a credit to each Lourdes colleague who cares for our patients,” said Alexander J. Hatala, President and Chief Executive Officer, Lourdes Health System. “They reflect not only our clinical performance but our steadfast commitment that patients receive outstanding quality care. We are proud of these awards and to say that Lourdes is among the best hospitals in the nation.”

In July, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center was recognized as among the top 10% of hospitals in the nation providing excellence in gynecologic surgery. The hospital also received a five-star rating for hysterectomy and gynecologic surgery.

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*   Healthgrades’ new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally.

This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2013-2015, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving five-stars as a group, on average 223,412 could potentially have been saved and 162,215 complications could potentially have been avoided.**

“Consumers have many choices regarding where to receive their healthcare, which is why it’s so vital that they understand outcomes performance at specific hospitals for specific conditions and procedures,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. “Those hospitals that have achieved a specialty excellence distinction from Healthgrades exemplify a commitment to exceptional quality of patient care.”

“We are honored to receive these awards,” said Dr. Reginald Blaber, Executive Director of Lourdes Cardiovascular Institute, Vice President of Cardiovascular Services, and Chairman of Medicine, Lourdes Health System. “These ratings tell our community that Lourdes stands for quality and safety, and that quality care is close to home. I thank our entire team for their work in achieving this success.”

*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures, as well as an evaluation of comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 18 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as five-star (statistically significantly better than expected), three-star (not statistically different from expected) and one-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
