Lourdes Bariatric Program Reaccredited as Comprehensive Center

Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center’s Bariatric Surgery program was recently reaccredited as a Comprehensive Center by the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This is the second accreditation Lourdes’ Bariatric Surgery program has received, with prior accreditation in 2013.

A MBSAQIP accreditation acknowledges a center’s commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients. It also signals the efforts made to provide multidisciplinary, high-quality and patient-centered care. Bariatric centers must apply for reaccreditation every three years.

Lourdes’ Bariatric team is made up of numerous weight-loss experts, including surgeons, nurses, dieticians and therapists.   More than 700 bariatric procedures have been performed at Lourdes since the program began in 2012.

“We are extremely pleased that our Bariatric Surgery program was reaccredited as a Comprehensive Center,” said Dr. Alan Pope, Chief Medical Officer, Lourdes Health System.   “This reaccreditation shows our team’s commitment and dedication to our patients and their families.”

“Lourdes Bariatric team is fully dedicated to patients’ overall well-being, from deciding the most appropriate weight-loss plan–whether surgical or non-surgical, to exercise instruction, nutrition counseling, support groups and continuous education afterward,” said Dr. Mark Salcone, Medical Director, Lourdes Bariatric Program.   “Our multidisciplinary, comprehensive program offers many options for those who need support.   Our focus is on health and long-term success.”

In the U.S, more than 15.5 million people suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institutes of Health.   Illnesses associated with obesity range from diabetes and heart disease to certain types of cancers.   Bariatric surgical procedures have been shown to reduce obesity, improve mortality and decrease the health risks from chronic diseases such as cardiomyopathy and diabetes.

Working with the MBSAQIP, The American College of Surgeons expanded its quality program so that it can assist bariatric patients in identifying those centers that provide optimal surgical care. Accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for bariatric patients.
