Lourdes Partners with Enroll America to Expand Health Coverage Enrollment

Monday, January 18 marks the kick-off of National Hospital and Provider Week of Action, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the final days of open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace and to highlight the outreach and enrollment efforts provided by U.S. hospitals.

To help those who are uninsured find affordable coverage before the January 31 deadline, Lourdes Health System, a member of Trinity Health–a national, not-for-profit Catholic health system operating 86 hospitals in 21 states, has partnered with Enroll America to promote its “Get Covered America” campaign.

“Lourdes is committed to serving our community and insurance coverage is the first-step to building a healthier community,” said Sister Maureen Shaughnessy, SC, Corporate Vice President of Mission, Lourdes Health System. “Supporting access to care aligns with our mission. We are dedicated to providing patients with enrollment opportunities so they can achieve and maintain good health, now and in the future.”

Lourdes sought to support the community and encourage enrollment through multiple avenues.   Some of these include:

  • Developing and distributing multi-language materials with Lourdes’ community partner, The Center for Family Services. All materials included a phone number for free in-person assistance. (http://www.lourdesnet.org/health-insurance-marketplace/  and view “resources”)
  • Sponsoring a special edition of “Embrace Life with Renai,” (WMCN-DT 44), a local television program based in Cherry Hill. The show focuses on health insurance enrollment and features a navigator from Lourdes’ community partner, The Center for Family Services, and a consumer who benefitted from enrollment. A second segment will feature a representative from Ritter Insurance Marketing. The shows will air  January 17 and 24  (bookending the Hospital and Provider Week of Action)
  • Creating public service announcements and donating ads that appeared on ESPN Comcast SportsNet and various cable stations
  • Printing and mailing direct mail postcards to “hot spots” in Camden and Burlington counties to offer one-on-one free assistance
  • Sending letters to all current Lourdes charity care patients to encourage enrollment and offering support through a broker call center coordinated by Trinity Health
  • Supporting Youth Enrollment Day on local college campuses in collaboration with a Vista volunteer at The Center for Family Services
  • Providing education and links to all resources to Lourdes internal colleagues. Externally, enrollment information is continually shared through patient newsletters, blog posts, social media, news releases, Lourdes’ website (lourdesnet.org), and at all community outreach events
  • On Sunday, January 17, Lourdes hosted an enrollment event at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 2818 River Avenue, in Camden. Health insurance professionals provided counseling and health insurance enrollment

“We know that one-on-one enrollment assistance is critical to many Americans taking that final step to enroll in a quality, affordable plan,”  said Anne Filipic, president of Enroll America.   “That’s why we’ve doubled down on bridging the gap between the uninsured and the certified experts that can help them for free. We’re focused on ensuring that every American who needs to pick a plan or reenroll has access to the resources they need to protect themselves and their family with health coverage.”

Hospital and Provider Week of Action comes with less than two weeks left in the open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act, which ends on midnight, January 31. Uninsured Americans who do not have coverage by then may face a fine and will likely have to wait until the next enrollment period to enroll in a plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace. However, if a consumer has a life change (marriage, loss of job, etc.), he or she might be eligible for New Jersey Family Care (Medicaid), of which there is no deadline.

Adds Sister Maureen Shaughnessy, “Lourdes believes that everyone should have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that they can afford treatment for an unexpected illness or injury.”
