Our Lady of Lourdes Statue Turns Blue for Autism Awareness

StatueBlueIn recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center will light the hospital’s iconic 30-foot, 15-ton statue of the Blessed Mother blue on April 2.

The lighting of the statue is in participation of the “Light It Up Blue” campaign, a global initiative that hopes to raise autism awareness by lighting the exterior lights blue of landmarks, bridges, and buildings. Famous landmarks that turn blue on April 2 included the Empire State Building, Aspen Mountain in Colorado, Niagara Falls and Christ the Redeemer in Brazil.

Lourdes Child Development Services works with children and families affected by autism.

Lourdes’ cherished statue has stood atop the medical center since its inception in 1950 and has served as a symbol of light and hope for Camden and its surrounding communities for more than six decades. The statue is lit green each time an organ transplant takes place at the hospital–in an effort to honor all organ donors and raise awareness of the need for organ donors.
