Lourdes Appoints New Director of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, Quality and Performance Improvement

RehmanMDOur Lady of Lourdes Medical Center has named Atiq Rehman, MD, FACS, as the director of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and as director for Quality and Performance Improvement.

Dr. Rehman comes to Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center from Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida, where he was director of robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery and the transcatheter valve program. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor at Columbia University.

“Dr. Rehman is an innovator in cardiothoracic surgery, having spearheaded the development of robotic coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), and minimally invasive mitral valve repair,” said Arthur Martella, MD, FACS, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center. “He truly cares about his patients and his breadth of experience and skills will enhance the array of cardiothoracic surgery at Lourdes.”

“As evidenced by its Healthgrades award for being one of the 50 best hospitals in the nation for cardiac surgery, Lourdes has a tremendous program,” said Dr. Rehman. “It is my goal to continue this tradition of excellence and provide my patients the highest quality surgery through the least invasive approach possible.”

Board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Rehman completed fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine and robotic/minimally invasive cardiac surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. He performed a surgical residency at Westchester Medical Center/New York Medical College and internship at State University of New York Health Science Center, Syracuse. Dr. Rehman earned his medical degree from the Aga Khan University School of Medicine.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Rehman is a member of multiple medical societies, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgeons.

Dr. Rehman has been involved with Edwards Life Sciences in the development of an endo-occlusion balloon and with various firms on physician education videos, including topics such as minimally invasive aortic valve replacement and robot-assisted CABG. Currently, Dr. Rehman is working with the MIT Media Lab on a spectrally encoded peripheral vision endoscope.

Dr. Rehman has authored 30 peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research at national and international medical conferences. He maintains educational websites on cardiothoracic surgery and healthcare leadership.
