Freeholders announce transformation of Haddon Ave corridor

leaders 2A stretch of Camden City’s Haddon Avenue is being transformed from the intersections of Vesper Boulevard to Euclid Avenue. The Freeholder Board will modernize infrastructure and enhance the gateway of the city around one its most vaunted institution’s- Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center.

“This stretch of Haddon Avenue is a key gateway to Camden, and is in front of one the city’s most venerable institutions, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center,” said Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works. “This $2.3 million improvement project will transform the roadway to meet the needs of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians for years to come.”

The project is the first of a multi-phase reconstruction of Haddon Avenue designed to allow safe and convenient travel for users of all modes of transportation.   When completed, the roadway will be resurfaced and pedestrian friendly sidewalks, curbs and ramps will be installed. The project will include upgrades to the traffic signals and significant storm water reconstruction, which is badly needed.

“This phase of the Haddon Avenue Improvement Project complements the many site improvements Lourdes has made in recent years, and the exciting new plans we are currently developing now that we have acquired the monastery next door to the hospital. Lourdes is currently involved in a facility master plan process that will help to guide our future endeavors. These changes to Haddon Avenue could not have come at a better time. We are grateful to all of our partners for helping to make this happen,” commented Alexander J. Hatala, President & CEO of Lourdes Health System.

Mayor Dana Redd talked about the ability to not only improve the roadway for today, but also prepare it for future capacity.

“These streetscape enhancements are not only welcomed but necessary to ensure our roadways can adequately manage the future infrastructure, vehicular and pedestrian demands,” Redd said. “The Haddon Avenue corridor is one of the Camden’s oldest thoroughfares.   It’s a gateway into the City, linking our residents and neighboring communities to Camden’s downtown amenities.   Haddon Avenue also plays an important role, serving as the business district for the Parkside, Whitman Park, Gateway and Downtown sections of Camden.   I commend Camden County for undertaking this project and for their continued efforts to reinvest in Camden.”

Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli said this project will create conformity and consistency to one of the county’s oldest roads.

“Haddon Avenue has been a landmark for residents in Camden County for centuries,” Cappelli said. “These enhancements will continue to build on the historic foundation of the former toll road.”
