Lourdes’ Hospitals Receive NICHE Designation

Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County and Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center have each earned a Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) designation. The designation recognizes Lourdes’ commitment to excellence in providing patient-centered care for older adult patients.

“Through our participation in the NICHE program, we offer evidence-based, interdisciplinary approaches that promote better outcomes, positive experiences, and improved care for older adults,” said Audrey  Jadczak, RN, MHA, chief nursing officer at Lourdes Health System. “This leads to greater satisfaction for patients, their families and staff.”

“Lourdes shows a tremendous commitment to meet the most critical challenge of our times — quality care of older adults,” said Liz Capezuti, PhD, RN, FAAN, director, Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders — NICHE. “The hospitals’ dedication to drive continuous improvement processes and enhance care marks them as leaders in the field.”

According to the Administration on Aging, the older population–persons age 65 years or older – numbered 41.4 million in 2011. They represented 13.3 percent of the U.S. population, more than one in every eight Americans. The number of older Americans increased by 6.3 million or 18 percent since 2000, compared to an increase of 9.4 percent for the under-65 population.

Citing these statistics, Jadczak says it’s critical that quality healthcare be provided to older adults. “As the nation’s aging population continues to increase, managing health care quality is a key focus for all providers, especially here at Lourdes. We recognize health issues facing the aging population, and have best practices in place to provide the best possible care.”

In addition, Jadczak says earning the NICHE designation has a broader meaning.   “NICHE not only focuses on our older adults that are hospitalized, but also our older adult outpatient population. By building upon our patient-centered care for older adults, we’re reaching our patients through physician offices and our Accountable Care Organization (ACO).   We’re truly providing patient-centered care across the healthcare continuum.”

NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) is the leading nurse driven program designed to help hospitals improve the care of older adults. The vision of NICHE is for all patients 65-and-over to be given sensitive and exemplary care. The mission of NICHE is to provide principles and tools to stimulate a change in the culture of healthcare facilities to achieve patient-centered care for older adults. NICHE, based at NYU College of Nursing and comprised of over 530 hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout North America, engages hospitals and their affiliates in achieving and sustaining the NICHE designation. NICHE designation demonstrates a hospital’s organizational commitment and continued progress in improving quality, enhancing the patient and family experience, and supporting hospitals’ efforts to serve their communities.
