Lourdes Health System Names Nursing Award Winners
Lourdes Health System recently named Carl Hammill, RN, Intensive Care Unit, Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County; and Kelly Marshbank, RN, Critical Care Unit, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, as its DAISY Nursing Award winners for the second quarter of 2014.
The award is presented in collaboration with The American Organization of Nurse Executives. It is part of the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
Hammill, of Mt. Laurel, was honored for his ability to comfort patients and their family members. One of his nominators stated, “On March 1, Carl Hammill was the caregiver for our brother. When speaking to Carl and explaining our concerns, we witnessed many great qualities that make him an exceptional nurse. Carl is an active listener, showed compassion and understanding. He asked my husband and me, ‘What do you feel?’ Carl gave his total undivided attention with our concerns and acted on them. Carl went above and beyond in the care of our brother.”
Marshbank, of Oaklyn, was honored for her patient-centered care. One nomination stated, “I was talking to a patient and he expressed his sincere appreciation for all that the nurses have done to support his recovery. ‘The staff really cares about the patients and really wants to know them as a person and not as a disease,’ he said. He went on to explain that he was going to miss a special work event due to being in the hospital. He noted that Kelly Marshbank demonstrated exceptional caring and compassion throughout the shift, meeting all of his needs, and she took the time to really find out about him and his work. He continued to tell me how after her shift was complete, Kelly came back to visit, again to spend time and cheer him up. Kelly stayed with this patient for about an hour after her shift. It was obvious how much this little act of kindness made such a difference to the patient. He told me, ‘Kelly is one in a million.’”
The DAISY award is presented to a nurse from each of the Lourdes hospitals every quarter.
The DAISY Award was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in honor of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received inspired the family to thank nurses nationwide for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.
