Robotic Surgery: A New Approach to Prostate Cancer Treatment
Robotic surgery may look and sound like science fiction, but it is now being used at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center to treat prostate cancer.
“The da Vinci S Robotic Surgical System is an exceptionally valuable tool for prostate surgery, ” said Dr. Butani, who has used the system to successfully treat prostate cancer.
The da Vinci Surgical System enhances surgeons’ abilities to perform delicate procedures. It provides the surgeon with 3-D imaging of the operating field and intuitive hand movement. “The da Vinci provides the surgeon with nearly all of the natural movements of the human wrist. It also eliminates hand tremor and improves dexterity to enable surgeons to do ever-finer surgery in a more controlled manner,” explained Dr. Butani.
Following robot-assisted surgery, patients typically experience:
- less pain;
- less risk of infection;
- less blood loss and scarring;
- shorter hospital stays;
- faster recovery and return to normal activities.
Currently, the da Vinci Surgical System is used by urologists at Lourdes to perform prostatectomies, but will expand to encompass other specialties and procedures over time.
