Embracing a “Culture of Patient Safety”
About 15 million cases of medical harm — from hospital-acquired infections to drug interactions to surgical errors — occur in this country every year.
The Lourdes Health System believes that a “culture of patient safety” can significantly reduce medical errors. A culture that embraces patient safety encourages hospital leadership, physicians, nurses, ancillary staff and patients to proactively work together to improve the way care is being delivered.
Patient safety initiatives at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County include:
- a medication administration system that uses bar coding technology at the bedside to ensure the correct medication is given to the right patient, at the right time, in the right dose;
- Rapid Response Teams of critical care clinicians who rush to patients experiencing early symptoms of cardiac or respiratory distress to stabilize them and prevent unnecessary complications or deaths;
- Lourdes’ Patient Connect Line, where patients, family members and visitors can offer suggestions on how to improve care. Just call (609) 835-5771.
