Lourdes Chief of Neonatology Named Interim President for Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative

Margaret Fernandes, MD, Chief of Neonatology at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, has been named interim president for the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative (SNJPC) announced Judy Donlen, RN, DNSc, JD, Executive Director of the Cooperative.

Dr. Fernandes was appointed by former president and long-time board member, Joe Bottalico, DO., who chose her to lead the organization because of a “complete confidence in Margaret’s abilities, dedication and good judgment.”

“Her successful election last June as President-elect demonstrates the clear support of colleagues, and her choice to seek office shows a willingness to shoulder the challenges of leadership,” states Dr. Bottalico. “We are grateful that she has agreed to step-in and fortunate for the expertise she brings.”

SNJPC, also known as the Cooperative, is a state-licensed, non-profit, maternal-child health organization serving the seven southernmost counties of New Jersey including Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.

The Cooperative’s programs and services are dedicated to improving health outcomes for pregnant women, babies and children through education, health planning, clinical care coordination and responding to emerging regional needs.

“I feel honored to take on this leadership role at the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative,” says Dr. Fernandes. “I have dedicated my entire career to helping at-risk babies and their families. This passion transcends into a strong commitment to the mission of the Cooperative and to creating a greater standard of maternal-child healthcare for the mothers and babies of South Jersey.”

The organization was founded in 1981 as a demonstration project by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) to reduce infant mortality and coordinate regional neonatal intensive care services, neonatal and maternal transfer and professional education.

Over the past three decades, SNJPC has become involved in many community-based projects aimed at addressing the prevention of preterm delivery and low birth-weight infants and has also become the medium through which many families are educated and informed about public health services and programs.

SNJPC oversees an integrated network of hospital and community agencies including Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, and is committed to collaboration with local public health agencies, including consumers as partners in policymaking. The Cooperative reaches into homes, hospitals and communities to help strengthen families, provide access to valuable services and ultimately build a healthier South Jersey.
