Lourdes CEO To Be Named Chairman of NJHA Board To Receive ACHE Award

Camden (NJ) Alexander J. Hatala, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of the Lourdes Health System and a leader with Catholic Health East New Jersey, has been selected to serve as chairman of the board of the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA) for 2010. Hatala’s installation was installed during NJHA’s 91st Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency Princeton on Jan. 22.

Hatala has served on the NJHA board in many capacities including treasurer and president-elect. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the nation’s leading professional society for healthcare leaders. At a session prior to the annual meeting, the ACHE presented Hatala with the Regent’s Senior Executive Award in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of healthcare leadership practices in New Jersey.

Hatala has been with the Lourdes Health System since 1986, when he joined Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center as the executive vice president and chief operating officer. Under his leadership, Lourdes acquired the former Rancocas Hospital (now Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County) and has become one of the leading health systems in the southern New Jersey region with an extensive physicians network and numerous community-based ambulatory care centers.

He was instrumental in Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center becoming the region’s largest provider of cardiology services and expanding the hospital’s organ transplant program to become the only program in New Jersey to perform kidney, pancreas and liver transplants. Attesting to Hatala’s guidance, vision and commitment to the community, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center was awarded the American Hospital Association’s prestigious Foster McGaw award in 1995 for excellence in community service.

Most recently Hatala spearheaded the reorganization efforts at Newark’s Cathedral Health System, leading to its integration into Catholic Health East (CHE). This resulted in CHE’s expanded presence in northern New Jersey.

Hatala is a member of the American Hospital Association, the New Jersey Conference of Catholic Health Care Facilities, Southern New Jersey Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Camden Partnership.
