Saturday, April 2, 2011 · Caesars Atlantic City
This year we paid tribute to Healing Spirit Award Honorees Kathleen V. Greatrex, MD and Albert Talone, DO for their commitment to the Lourdes mission and core values.
Kathleen V. Greatrex, MD, was nine years old when she picked up Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body. Today, she's chief of radiology and nuclear medicine at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and a leading expert in breast imaging. "This is what I'm supposed to be. It was my destiny. I can't see myself doing anything else. Nothing comes close," she explains. "I know in some way I'm touching another life. God put me at Lourdes for a reason." Dr. Greatrex's motivation to become a radiologist was her mother, who suffered a difficult battle with breast cancer. Before her mother's death at age 56, Dr. Greatrex made a promise that she would devote her life to fighting breast cancer. And she has held true to her promise. Dr Greatrex dedicates a great deal of time to educating patients. She takes personal interest in every patient she sees and treats each one as a family member. She teaches patients about their specific disease and counsels them on treatment options. "One of the most important qualities a physician must have is compassion, not only for the patient, but the family as well," she says. "Our goal is to ease their suffering and that's what I've tried to do."
Albert A. Talone, DO, From managing acute and chronic disorders to acting as an advocate for a patient in need of specialty care, Albert A. Talone, DO, has provided compassionate and dedicated healthcare to the Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County community for more than 35 years. . A native of Trenton, Dr. Talone graduated from Holy Cross High School in Delran and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He was drafted during the Vietnam War, where he served as a medical specialist airman in the United States Air Force Reserve. After completing military service, Dr. Talone attended Kansas City University of Osteopathic Medicine, where he obtained a deep appreciation of preventive and community medicine as a primary care physician. Dr. Talone began his career as an attending physician at then-Rancocas Hospital, and in 1980 served as president and chief of the medical staff. In this position, he helped to combine the professional staffs of Rancocas and Zurbrugg Memorial Hospital after the two facilities merged. Dr. Talone believes the focus of care is to spend adequate time and assure quality care for all patients. "Medicine is a constantly evolving art and science," he says. "It is always exciting. There's always something new to learn."
Following a cocktail reception, guests enjoyed the music of the Fabulous Greaseband. The evening was filled with emotion, fun and friendship. Over $115,000 was raised for the benefit of the breast cancer imaging center at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, as well as community programs and services.
"We are very thankful for the tremendous support from our Board, physicians, volunteers, associates, and partners in healthcare." said chairpersons, Jennifer and Brad Bono.
