Stroke Prevention Procedures

For most patients, lifestyle changes, medication and other treatment options will help to prevent a stroke. Some, however, are at high risk and their doctor has determined that a procedure is necessary to prevent a stroke from occurring.

At Lourdes, interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons offer a variety of procedures to prevent stroke in high-risk patients. Carotid stenting, in which a small mesh device is inserted into the carotid artery to assist blood flow, is performed at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden, which is among select hospitals that perform procedure, with outcomes that surpass national and international registries. Our cardiothoracic surgeons are equally expert in the surgical approach to stroke prevention, carotid entarterectomy, an open surgical technique. Each procedure has specific criteria as to whether a patient is a candidate. Please consult your doctor to discuss the option that might be right for you.
