Reversing Tubal Ligation (Reanastomosis)
"This is for people who have had previous tubal ligation, what some call getting their tubes tied, and who for one reason or another decide they want to have another child and pursue future fertility," said Dr. Obianwu. "We can offer them the option to put their tubes back together."
Prior to the advances in laparoscopic techniques, the tubal reanastomosis procedure was done with open surgery requiring a large cut across the lower abdomen. It was challenging and very expensive, and required hospitalization and prolonged recovery the surgeon said. "However, it is important to inform women that reanastomosis procedures are not covered by insurance. They are expensive and require a hospital stay," he said.
Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery via small incisions have greatly improved the approach to this procedure and the newer robotic equipment improved that further, enabling surgeons to make the Fallopian tubes whole once more.
