Lourdes Center for Public Health: Summer Institute
The Lourdes Center for Public Health hosts a ten-week summer internship program for college undergraduates who are interested in public health or health care careers, especially in service to vulnerable populations in the urban environment. Through this program, students participate collaboratively in a variety of research projects under the mentorship of the Center's staff and key project supervisors throughout the Lourdes Health System. Research projects are selected to address both community needs and to match student interest. At the end of the internship, students present their findings and recommendations to Lourdes Health System leadership, administration, and other key staff. Links to documents featuring past participants profiles and projects are listed below.
We strive to offer an exciting, enriching and enjoyable selection of projects and events to include in our internship program. Summer Institute Interns can expect to gain a wide variety of experience at Lourdes. This is accomplished by a structure which allows each student to enjoy exposure to different aspects of health care. Each student is assigned to a mentor with whom they work for 9-weeks on a project in the mentor’s field. In addition to the 9-week projects, simultaneously all summer interns participate in a project rotation as well. The rotation allows for the students to cycle through a series of smaller, ‘pod’ projects with other mentors at our facility.
Please check back after March 1, 2012 for a complete list of projects for the next Summer Institute.
All of our project mentors are eager to share their professional experience and interest in public health. Accordingly, each week project mentors and other health care executives meet with all of the student interns to discuss their lives as medical professionals and to engage the students in thought-provoking discussions regarding health care. The mentoring aspect of the Institute is especially rewarding because in addition to the medical mentor to which each student is assigned, the students also have the support and guidance of other Center for Public Health staff.
