Gynecologic Surgeon Details Major Pelvic Conditions and Advanced Minimally-Invasive Surgical Techniques at Lourdes
In his two decades as an ob/gyn specialist, Chike W. Obianwu, M.D., has seen many new trends in women's health, including more effective medications, better understanding of the complex reproductive system and amazing new surgical tools and techniques.
He has also noticed that his patients are coming into his office with a much greater understanding of their condition and treatment options than ever before. "More women are coming in here and specifically requesting that I use minimally invasive surgical procedures for their condition," he said. "They see these techniques on the web or in the media or hear about it from friends. They know what they want."
As a member of the gynecological surgery team at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, Dr. Obianwu has substantial experience with minimally-invasive laparoscopic procedures that reduce pain, scarring and recovery time. He is one of several surgeons in robotic surgery using the DaVinciŽ robotic system at Lourdes. (See Advantages of Robotic Surgery.)
But Dr. Obianwu stressed that surgery is usually the option of last resort for the conditions that he sees in his office. In a wide-ranging interview, the physician provided details on the more significant issues confronting his patients. They include:
- Uterine Fibroids (Myomas)
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic Organ or Uterine Prolapse
- Hysterectomy
- Ovarian Cysts
- Pelvic Adhesions
- Abnormal Bleeding
- Reversing Tubal Ligation (Reanastomosis)
