Risk Factors for Non-Healing Wounds
Do you have a wound that hasn't healed in 6-8 weeks of medical/surgical treatment? It may fall into the "non-healing" category and require special treatment.
Other circumstances that may signal a non-healing wound:
- If you have you had multiple abdominal operations for hernias only to have a recurrence.
- If a recent injury to an extremity looks worse than it did when you sustained the injury.
Here are risk factors for developing a non-healing wound:
- malnutrition
- obesity
- diabetes mellitus
- smoking
- radiation treatment
- non-healing burn
- suppressed immune system
- cancer
- spinal cord patient
- bedridden
- venous insufficiency
- peripheral vascular disease

Remember, infection stops a wound from healing. And a good nutritional program will help promote healing.
