Electroencephalography (EEG) measures the electrical activity produced by the brain, by recording these signals through electrodes placed on the scalp. A routine clinical EEG recording typically lasts 20 to 40 minutes. During this time, the technician may perform different "activation procedures" to evoke different brain activity than is seen during the resting, awake state. The technician may ask the patient to participate in these steps by sleeping, undergoing intermittent stimulation with light, hyperventilating or closing or blinking the eyes. The readings measured as a result are another way to help detect abnormal brain patterns that can indicate a predisposition to seizures due to such problems such as epilepsy—one of the types of conditions for which the neurology service at Lourdes offers expert care.
EEG is also an important component of sleep studies, a way of testing for sleep disturbances or disorders. Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County offers these studies at its sleep laboratory.
