Lourdes Surgeon Named to National Cancer Commission

A surgeon at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County has been elected by the American College of Surgeons Board of Regents to serve on the prestigious Commission on Cancer.

Arnold Baskies, MD, chief of the section of general, oncologic and breast surgery at Lourdes, will serve a three-year term with the Commission on Cancer, a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to reducing the morbidity and mortality of cancer through education, standard-setting and the monitoring of quality care.

The commission was established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922 and sets standards for quality multidisciplinary cancer care delivered primarily in hospital settings. The commission surveys hospitals to assess compliance with those standards; collects standardized and quality data from approved hospitals to measure treatment patterns and outcomes; and uses the data to evaluate hospital provider performance and develop effective educational interventions to improve cancer care outcomes at the national and local level.

The organization is comprised of more than 100 individuals whom are either surgeons representing the American College of Surgeons or a representatives from the 39 national, organizations affiliated with the commission.

Dr. Baskies is the recipient of major awards in cancer research, and is widely recognized in his role in providing leadership in cancer prevention and treatment in New Jersey. In 2000, he was appointed by the governor to chair the Governor's Task Force on Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment. His task force authored the first comprehensive cancer control plan for New Jersey, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has designated the plan as a model for the rest of the country. Dr. Baskies also serves on the Board of Directors of the Eastern Division of the American Cancer Society. Dr. Baskies has maintained a practice in southern New Jersey for 23 years and has treated more than 2,000 patients with breast cancer.

Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County is a 259-bed community hospital in Willingboro. Specialty services include the Lourdes Cancer Program, which is a member of University of Pennsylvania Cancer Network; cardiology services, maternity services; a wound care center; a sleep disorders center; behavioral health services and extensive diagnostic and treatment services.
