Tuesday, March 6, 2007
Camden, NJ - It's a long known fact that listening to music can soothe your soul, but recent studies have shown that it can also heal your physical body, by relieving anxiety and stress, inducing relaxation, providing a pleasant distraction and bringing comfort to hospital patient.
Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center is the first hospital in New Jersey to partner with WXPN Musicians On Call to bring a variety of music to patients, according to Alexander J. Hatala, President/CEO of the Lourdes Health System. "We believe that bringing music to patients' bedside will enhance the environment of care and add another dimension to our healing process."
The program includes:
"We are excited to offer this new program to patients," said Hatala. "Lourdes is continually seeking complementary therapies to provide a holistic approach to healing."
The CD library is currently available to patients. Representatives from Lourdes and WXPN are working on plans for an event to kick-off the live performance aspect of the program this spring.
WXPN, the Philadelphia-based radio station that sponsors Musicians On Call program in the Delaware Valley area, is recruiting volunteer guides to assist the musicians at the hospital during their rounds. The guides meet musicians at the hospital, communicate with hospital staff, introduce musicians to patients, walk with musicians as they go from room to room, and generally facilitate the WXPN Musicians On Call experience. The CD library, which includes all types of musical genres from pop to classical and country to gospel as well as jazz, new age, rock and others, will be available through the patient learning channel at each patient's bedside. Patients will be able to select music according to their own personal tastes and interests. In addition, the CDs and players will be used by the hospital's Holistic Health nurse for one-on-one therapies with patients.
