Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center Welcomes New Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Arthur T. Martella, MD, has recently joined Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center as chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery. His special interests include the use of robotics in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.

Dr. Martella, a clinical assistant professor at The University of Pennsylvania, comes to Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center from Phoenixville Hospital, where he was an attending cardiothoracic surgeon. During that time, he was also an attending cardiothoracic surgeon at Brandywine, Pottstown and Mercy Fitzgerald hospitals. Prior to that, Dr. Martella was an attending cardiothoracic surgeon and Director of Thoracic Oncology at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He also served as Medical Director for Cardiothoracic Surgery at Paoli Hospital.

"Dr. Martella has been a regional leader in the use of robotics for cardiac and thoracic surgery," says Dr. Alan R. Pope, chief medical officer at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center. "His broad experience and skills in cardiothoracic surgery will enhance the full array of cardiothoracic services at Lourdes."

Commenting on how he intends to enhance Lourdes cardiothoracic surgery service, Dr. Martella said, "It is my goal to provide the highest quality surgery through the least invasive approach possible."

Board-certified in surgery and thoracic surgery, Dr. Martella completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Rochester. He performed a surgical residency and internship at Montefiore Medical Center/Einstein College of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and his bachelor's degree from Columbia University.

Dr. Martella is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of multiple medical societies, including the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He serves as a member of Johnson & Johnson's Professional Education Advisory Board.

Dr. Martella has authored numerous publications and has presented his research at national and international medical conferences.
