State-of-the-art Kidney Surgery Performed at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County
The latest surgical techniques to treat kidney cancer are available at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County. One of the newest is handassisted laparoscopic nephrectomy, which is an improvement over previous surgical techniques.
This procedure consists of three small abdominal incisions (two 1-inch incisions and one 2.5-inch incision) that allow the surgeon to insert the needed instruments as well as to manually manipulate and remove the kidney by hand. "With previous laparoscopic techniques, you couldn't determine the size or condition of the tumor," said Adam Perzin, M.D., a urologist on staff at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County.
Along with his partner, Robert Goldlust, M.D., Dr. Perzin has performed more than 50 of the procedures. Compared to previous open surgeries, patients usually leave the hospital within 72 hours and recover more quickly, he said.
