Lourdes Rehab Patients Reduce Stress with Yoga
Studies have shown that relaxation exercises have heart-healthy benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and "bad" cholesterol. For more than 10 years, patients at the Cardiac Rehab Center at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center have learned to practice yoga as part of their treatment.
"After recovering from a cardiac event, a patient still has to go back to a job, paying the bills, raising a family. We teach the patient ways to deal with the stress," said Maryann Classick-Wallace, R.N., B.S.N., Cardiac Rehab Nurse Manager.
A certified yoga instructor from the Lourdes Wellness Center teaches the one-hour class. Patients practice yoga poses on a floor mat or in a chair, depending on their ability.
During their 12-week treatment program, patients also learn how to relax through guided imagery and meditation, as well as nutrition tips and healthy cooking.
If you or a loved one has suffered a heart attack, Lourdes Cardiac Rehab can help with recovery. For more information or to make an appointment, call (856) 757-3752.
