Lourdes Opens Center for Hepatitis C, Liver Disease Treatment
A diagnosis of hepatitis should always be taken seriously. Chronic, untreated hepatitis can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer or death.
The Lourdes Southern New Jersey Center for Liver Disease is dedicated to managing and treating all liver ailments, including hepatitis. Martin Black, M.D., Director of Transplant Hepatology, and Hisham ElGenaidi, M.D., Associate Director of Transplant Hepatology, lead the center's medical staff.
Hepatitis C, spread by contact with infected blood and the number-one reason for liver transplants, is a particular focus of the center, Dr. ElGenaidi said. "We evaluate, treat medically and, where appropriate, list patients with severe cirrhosis for liver transplant," he said. "Our staff provides education and compassionate support, as the treatment for hepatitis C is rigorous."
