Lourdes Surgeon Named to Regional Post

Arnold Baskies, M.D., Chief of the Section of General, Oncologic and Breast Surgery at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County, has been named Chief Medical Officer for the American Cancer Society Eastern Division, the largest division in the United States. In addition to providing medical leadership to this division that includes all of New York state and New Jersey, Dr. Baskies will serve as the organization's public, legislative and media spokesman.

Dr. Baskies is the recipient of major awards in cancer research and is widely recognized for his role in providing leadership in cancer prevention and treatment. In 2000, he was appointed by the governor to chair the Governor's Task Force on Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment. The task force authored the first comprehensive cancer control plan for New Jersey, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has designated the plan as a model for the rest of the country.

Dr. Baskies has been on the medical staff at Lourdes for 25 years and has treated more than 2,000 patients with breast cancer.
