Lourdes Center for Public Health

Recognizing the import role that public health and population-based methodologies can play in effective health promotion and disease prevention, the Lourdes Health System established the Lourdes Center for Public Health to engage in public health studies and activities in the communities served by those New Jersey hospitals that are members of Catholic Health East.

The Center partners with community organizations and with regional academic institutions in projects of applied public health practice. By engaging the academic community and graduate-level public health students in research, the Center addresses public health concerns and encourages and equips future generations to become involved.

Lourdes Nurse Anesthesia Program

Founded in 1978, the Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center Nurse Anesthesia Program is one of the few hospital-based courses of its kind. It is affiliated with Drexel University.

Nurse anesthetists play critical roles in the operating room, administering anesthesia to keep the patient pain free, maintaining levels intraoperatively and overseeing recovery afterward. Additionally CRNAs provide 65% of anesthesia services in this country and in rural areas may be the sole anesthesia provider.

During the 27-month program, each student, who is already a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of critical care experience, must complete a minimum of 550 cases and 800 clock hours. They must also complete intense course work in physiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, physics, and principles of anesthesia practice. Upon completion, the student earns an MSN with a specialty in nurse anesthesia and is eligible to sit for the national certification exam.
